About Me

I’m Van Binfa, a freelance illustrator, writer, editor, transcription specialist, and advocate.

I have worked as a freelance illustrator and writer for the past ten years. I specialize in cartoons, zines, and webcomics. I work almost exclusively in watercolors. My work ranges from the humorous to the profound, inspired by self-reflection and a commitment to personal growth. In 2012, I worked as the resident cartoonist at xQsi, a trans/queer multimedia online magazine. I created a series of webcomics dedicated to telling my experience as a trans Latinx at the start of their transition.

My work in the past ten years reflects my core values: authenticity, integrity, and compassion. It is my firm belief that individuals thrive while working together, connected and committed to positive change.

When I'm not working on a variety of projects, I enjoy listening to jazz and history podcasts. I'm an avid reader, an ardent nature enthusiast, and always on the hunt for a good cake recipe to try.

Over the years, I have worked as an advocate for queer/trans communities of color throughout Chicago. I started my own grassroots collective called Soy Quien Soy, and enjoyed my role as a public speaker.

I have given numerous presentations focusing on Trans 101, QTPOC experiences, and disability issues. My advocacy work includes past collaborations with:

  • The Chicago House

  • The Center on Halsted

  • Howard Brown Health

  • Harper College

  • Lake Forest College

  • Benedictine University

  • Aurora University

  • Pinwheels
